This is the source-bounded reading edition of the reconstructed lecture — the strictest of the project's editions: prose that stays within what the manuscript notes license. The left column is the ensemble-verified transcription of the sheets; the right column joins the notes into readable prose. Expansions of Stapledon's shorthand are silent, but every editorial addition — every connective sentence, every framing of a marginal note, every word without a note behind it — is tinted like this, and the scaffolding button hides or shows the tinting. Where you read the notes differently, the disagreement is with a visible editorial choice, not a hidden one. The editorial headnote below records the occasion and the manuscript's shape, with evidence classes stated; the fuller-voiced performing edition (v2) remains available.
The occasion is written on the sheets themselves. Sheet 1 carries, beside the title and in the teal pencil that also supplies this set's underlinings and marginal keys, the inscription Cambridge Univ Democratic Front / Feb 1938 — the only delivery evidence the project holds for this lecture. Its evidence class is on-sheet inscription, uncorroborated: no independent record of a Cambridge delivery is held, and the concordance's provenance survey dates the set February 1938 from this inscription. The internal evidence (the Spanish war in the present tense; Huxley's non-attachment gospel — Ends and Means, 1937 — discussed as current; the mid-1930s civil-liberties docket of sedition bill and Vernon case) is consistent with the inscription; it does not independently confirm it. Sheet 1 also bears a red “43” and a pencilled “F43” whose function has not been established.
The manuscript (Liverpool University Library OS/F11/28; the boxed STAP. stamp with “F11/28” added by hand is on the final face) runs to twelve captured faces: a main sequence Stapledon paginated 1–9; one unpaginated working leaf of rule-separated jottings between pages 6 and 7 (Russia, Christian ethics, private initiative, centralisation — with a twice-occurring disputed reading, “Arm” against “Am” and “Plan”); and a final leaf whose recto is headed SUMMARY in red — a “2” in its margin is unexplained — and marked “over” at the foot, the recap continuing on the verso and ending in the diagonal cue “After θ trouble”. The teal layer rides over the base ink as a revision pass, and the strikings record tightening: on the alternatives sheet the possessive “Huxley's” is struck before “future” (the verso recap keeps “Huxley's future” unstruck), and on the tendencies sheet two struck lines — “not out of the blue”, “through left Wing movement” — abandon one way of answering whether community can interfere.
The argument, in brief: man rose by intelligence and sociality, not merely by weapons; human nature divides, for this purpose, into herd-mentality, individualism and the will for community; the crisis of the day is the impact of science and mechanical power on a primitive mentality; the age's temper is the flight from Liberalism — Russia's “para-fascism”, Italy and Germany's totalitarianism, Britain's quieter drift; the Left must stress kindliness, intelligence, character; Huxley “has the core all right” but oversimplifies; what is needed is “Levy + Huxley” — the spirit of Christ and the practice of Lenin. Seven alternative futures follow, “Trouble certainly ahead”, and beyond the trouble a small, unified, classless world of “aristocrats” concentrated on “knowing, feeling, willing”, “toward the Stars”.
In the corpus, the concordance reads this lecture as the political re-keying of the 1934 material: the herd/community distinction canonical on Humanism and Superhumanism's sheet 25 becomes the analytic backbone here (sheets 1–3, Heard named); fascism as perverted worship — “mystical cravings”, “racial divinity” (sheet 6) — extends the 1934 diagnosis of the mystical Race-deity; the Christ/Lenin formula is the two-loyalties theme in political key; and the closing world-of-aristocrats motif recurs in Our Responsibility Towards the Future and Atomic Power. Not known: whether the delivery took place, and before whom; the references behind the bare surnames Levy and Macmurray (the sheets give no more than the names); and any external record of the occasion.
The first sheet is headed ALTERNATIVE FUTURES, with the delivery inscription in teal pencil near the page number — “Cambridge Univ Democratic Front / Feb 1938” — and a red “43” with a pencilled “F43” below it, numbering whose function is not established. A struck line near the head of the sheet — “Future depends on these” — is not voiced here; the unstruck form of the thought stands on the summary sheet. In the prose that follows, editorial connective tissue is tinted like this; expansions of Stapledon's shorthand are silent.
I want to speak about alternative futures. But let me begin by saying that prophesy is futile: I missed both Fascism and Russia, and that is a sufficient warning against posing as a prophet. What we can profitably do is to envisage possibilities implicit in Man's present state. Therefore we must begin by analysing today.
How Man gained his present position: by intelligence and sociality — not merely by weapons. First, intelligence: insight and habit-breaking — the power of dealing with novel situations. Consider the spectral Tarsier — small and weak; hands, eyes, brain; manipulation, binocular vision, versatility. Man's equipment carries these further: first, sensory discrimination increased; second, more delicate manipulation; third, greater versatility — analysing and relating.
Second, human sociality. Contrast mere gregariousness (the will to conform and enforce conformity) — herd-mentality: self and others not realised; compare Heard's pre-individual. Most human sociality is of this type — but a leaven of something better.
The better kind rests on self-consciousness and other-consciousness (I neglect the philosophical problem of “self”): awareness of oneself as an enduring conscious centre and a system of particular needs — with, keyed alongside, an implicit goal: the fulfilment of capacity — knowing, feeling, willing or doing. And a corresponding awareness of others — only of one or two others; fragmentary, precarious; hence “self-conscious” love and hate.
From this, community, contrasted with gregariousness — respect for others as individuals (the line is an insertion, and a marginal key sets individualism against it). First, the community of contact, small scale: based on mutual personal awareness — mates, family, group; “fraternity” — the margin adds: mutual enrichment. Second, community of principle, large: based on established will — to treat others as individuals; to respect differences; diversity encouraged, for mutual enrichment; synthesis by common purpose. A long marginal note weighs the part played by “community” in human societies: slight, precarious — but important.
The prerequisites of community: a modicum of intelligence and sensibility; mutual knowledge — information; education for “personality-in-community”; freedom of expression; mutual acceptance; absence of serious frustration — e.g. economic justice.
How does History happen? Not by dialectical idealism (logical necessity in ideas). By dialectical materialism? — yes, cautiously stated: the impact of environment on human nature; but human nature changes, by force of tradition.
Three factors of human nature (for this purpose). First, herd-mentality — gregariousness: the will to conform and enforce conformity. Second, individualism — shrewd self-seeking, for self, family, group. Third, the will for community — the true social will, for a society of developed individuals, mutually enriching; its ideal: personality-in-community.
All are products of past environmental pressure? (the query is the note's own) — individualism for the strongest. Economic determinism operates on all three — that is, through the desire for food, comfort, safety. Individualism normally dominant now. Herd mentality interferes — wars, partly from nationalist passions. Will for community interferes — rarely and precariously: Early Christianity; the French Revolution; the Russian Revolution. In estimating the future, bear all three in mind — and their fluctuations (one small word here is a disputed reading — “ð”, “of” or “&” — without effect on the sense). And, set off at the foot: no hope unless community-will wins.
In estimating the future, take into account: first, the course of economic determinism — keyed in the margin: individualism; second, the future of herd-mentality — will it increase or decrease?; third, the future of the will for community — will it eventually dominate?
Now, an analysis of Today. The cause of all our trouble: the impact of science and mechanical power on a primitive mentality — traditional behaviour inadequate. Such instruments demand, first, a planned world-economy (but ours is haphazard); and, second, real community will.
Science opens vistas of progress — material and spiritual. But: it gives power to reactionaries (to the dominant class) — the power of propaganda and oppression. What our struggles are all about: the effort to achieve integration and individuality — in the margin, diagonally: unity and diversity.
First, the integration of the human race: so that peoples shall be organic to the whole — and occupational groups ditto; the parts must function harmoniously — freely, willingly — for the whole. But contrast the integration of an organism: human individuals are not cells.
The second aim: the fulfilment of individuality. There is a seeming conflict with integration — compare the conflict of State and individual. But, rightly understood, community and individuality involve one another: real community demands high-grade individuality. The conflict is only between herd-mentality and individualism — or between the abstract State and the abstract individual.
The margin names the temper of our age: the flight from Liberalism — policy and culture. The causes of Liberalism: the bourgeois battle for power (at first, allied to the proletariat); puritanism; science. The essentials of Liberalism: first, individualism — keyed egoisms; second, democracy; third, free intelligence; fourth, Christian morality.
How Liberalism failed — and, the margin insists, it deserved to fail: it did not deliver the goods — because no equality of bargaining power; because insincere morality. But — a marginal note, its verb “keep” struck, sets the good against the next item — namely the workers' combination: individualism was useless to them.
Russia: the triumph of combination — individualism discredited; up collectivism: herd mentality, not community; democracy postponed; tyranny for good ends. A margin query: intelligence — harnessed? And, double-underlined: para-fascism.
Italy and Germany: also reject individualism — capitalism harnessed to totalitarianism. But also: rejection of “materialism” (revulsion from licentiousness) and from intellectualism — mystical cravings; racial divinity. Rejection of democracy — glorification of discipline. Rejection of Christian morality — up mastery, ruthlessness. And, keyed fourth from the margin: suppression of free intelligence.
Britain: the same tendencies, less violent. First, a tendency to trustification: cartels in each industry, to keep up prices; future coordination? — a Fascist Grand Council. Second, the failure of democracy: the futility of parliament. Third, the curtailment of civil liberties: police encroachments; gas drill; physical culture; the sedition bill; the Vernon case, etc. Fourth, disgust with intellectualism: Eddington; praxis; activism. Fifth, a change of moral temper: blood sports; bull fights; Hemingway. And, the sheet's last line: other countries.
This unpaginated leaf is a working sheet — short blocks separated by rules, two of them numbered ① and ②. The word rendered “armament” below is a disputed reading in both of its occurrences: “Arm”, with “Am” and “Plan” preserved as alternatives; one reading is voiced, the doubt stands.
Industry is specialised; therefore integrate. ① Russia — due to armament and attack: under inevitable war, more planning; afterwards — no armament. ② Christian ethics turns up again.
Private initiative in capitalism — the phrase stands alone between rules. A collectivist order may sacrifice initiative — with “econ” struck, and cultural; below another rule, bare: the moral standard. Centralization — decentralization. A local group must have room to act (a preceding “all” is struck) — or sacrifice cultural initiative.
A summary of Today's tendencies. First, economic determinism tends toward — unification of control (ultimately world-wide); suppression of individuality, of freedom, of free intelligence; ruthlessness. That is: loss of intelligence and sociality — by which Man climbed.
Second, what the Marxian says: the dialectic will breed a strong proletariat and a rickety capitalism (trade cycles and wars); finally, World Communism. Third, the Marxians overlook — first, the power of oppression and propaganda (in the modern world); second, herd mentality; third, after the Revolution — what? (the bad side of Russia): para-fascism.
Fourth: can the will for true community interfere? Two struck lines — “not out of the blue”, “through left Wing movement” — are not voiced here. Yes, if we keep the essentials in view — intelligence, individuality, mutual respect and the common purpose of personality-in-community.
The Left Wing mentality today. There is a heroic aspect of Communism — Spain. But: doctrinaire — oversimplified; partisan; ruthless — keyed to social theory and philosophy. Boxed diagonally in the margin: glorification of bias. (A margin jotting beside “philosophy” — “Len” — is left unexpanded.)
Righteous indignation — well justified, against the Smug; and indignation is a driving force. But: do they always keep the goal in view — i.e. personality-in-community? I am thinking particularly of the second-rank Left Wing leaders.
Facts that must be faced. Britain is “middle class”; therefore the appeal must be middle class — i.e. to the best motives of the middle class, and to self-interest for the future. What the best middle class fears (not for itself merely): the suppression of kindliness and intelligence. Therefore the Left must stress these — stress character, integrity.
Huxley's solution: he has the core all right — he stresses intelligence, individuality, kindliness. But he oversimplifies — and, keyed from the margin, idealizes human nature: first, no absolute precept works (the non-violence theory); second, vague economics; third, mysticism too Eastern. But non-attachment is needed — both for strength and to impress the masses.
What we need: Levy and Huxley — the spirit of Christ and the practice of Lenin (compare Macmurray, but vague).
Alternative futures: intelligence and sociality — up? or down? First, a crash in world war. Second, cycles, wars, decline. Third, world-communist-revolution — then: community or tyranny? Fourth, a Fascist future: (a) national conflicts; (b) world fascism. Fifth, yet another kind of future (the manuscript strikes “Huxley's” before “future” here; the summary sheet keeps the attribution unstruck). Sixth, the decline of the West. Seventh, falling population — good or bad?
Trouble certainly ahead — double-underlined; no hope without revolution, of some sort. Beyond the trouble? — a small world population; unified, classless; aristocrats; full mechanization; the simple life; concentration on “knowing, feeling, willing”; toward the Stars.
The last leaf is the lecture's own recapitulation. Its recto is headed SUMMARY in red, with a “2” in the left margin whose meaning is not established, and a diagonal “over” at the foot; the recap continues on the verso. This section follows the recto.
The introductory, again: no prophesy — potentialities in today. The future depends on: intelligence and sociality. How man gained his position — intelligence: the Tarsier (discrimination, manipulation, versatility); human sociality: self-consciousness and other-consciousness — community–personality — the prerequisites of community.
History: not a dialectic of ideas; not a pure materialistic dialectic; the environment's impact on human nature — three factors: herd-mentality, individualism, will for community. Economic forces act on all, but individualism is strongest — i.e. the will for food, comfort, safety.
Today: the root cause: the impact of science and power. What is at stake? — integration of the human race; the advance of individuality. The margin sets the head: the temper of Today — the flight from “Liberalism” (doctrine and mentality): causes of liberalism; essentials of liberalism — individualism; democracy; free intelligence; Christian morality. Why liberalism failed — the margin: it deserved to fall; but — it did not deliver the goods; it ran contrary to economic determinism; insincerity. And in the margin: keep what is good — the workers' combination.
Russia — the death blow of liberalism: collectivism and materialism — and intelligence, but regimented. Italy and Germany — also anti-individualist: the “corporate state”; capitalism controlled; but also — anti-materialist: mystical craving — a racial deity; and, from the margin, suppression of tenderness; and — suppression of free intelligence. Britain — cartellization; the failure of parliament; the loss of civil liberties.
The verso continues the summary of Today. The real trend of economic determinism: toward Fascism, or para-fascism — bureaucracy; regimentation, ruthlessness; suppression of individuality, of free intelligence.
What the Marxian replies: the rise of the proletariat; capitalism falling — trade cycles. What the Marxian overlooks: the power of propaganda and modern oppression; and gullibility — herd-mentality.
The Future: can we interfere with this economic determinism? — reinstate intelligence and individuality. Can Communism do it? The good side of Communism: devotion, energy. The bad side: doctrinaire, narrow? — indignation not enough. Levy — the bare surname closes the item.
Huxley's Gospel: an important principle — but oversimplified: first, no absolute precepts; second, feeble economics; third, mysticism too Eastern; fourth, it idealizes human nature; fifth, it ignores the concrete situation. Unite Levy and Huxley: put the spirit of Christ into the practice of Lenin.
Alternative futures: intelligence and community — up or down? The possibilities: first, a crash in world war; second, cycles, wars, decline; third, the Marxian world Revolution — community or tyranny?; fourth, the Fascist future — (a) national conflicts, (b) world fascism; fifth, Huxley's future; sixth, the Decline of the West; seventh, falling population.
Trouble, in one form or another, seems unavoidable — the running sheet had put it flatly: trouble certainly ahead. And the leaf's last mark, a diagonal margin cue: after the trouble?
The verso also carries the circular Liverpool University Library stamp (“STAP.” boxed at its centre) with “F11/28” added by hand — the manuscript's afterlife as an archival object (catalogue reference OS/F11/28).
